EXHIBITION

Bonnard's Worlds

November 5, 2023–January 28, 2024

Experience the light and color of France through the eyes of painter Pierre Bonnard. In the first major exhibition of the artist’s work in Texas in nearly 40 years, Bonnard’s Worlds presents paintings—glowing with intense colors and flooded with light—that transport you from the larger realms in which Bonnard lived to the most private interior spaces of his homes and of his own thoughts.

The Kimbell Acquires Celebrated Landscape Painting by Thomas Gainsborough

"Going to Market, Early Morning," c. 1773, is an important example of Gainsborough’s innovations in British landscape painting.

Detail of a painting. The scene is set in a misty morning landscape with trees and a dirt road. Women and men on horses walk the path with sidesaddle bags and baskets in their hands. A dog walks along with them. On the left, a woman and two sleeping children sit in the grass looking at the people passing. There are sheep grazing in the distance.

The Kimbell Art Museum announces 2023–24 exhibitions: Bonnard's Worlds, Art and War in the Renaissance: The Battle of Pavia Tapestries, and Dutch Art in a Global Age: Masterpieces from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Three details of artworks. The detail on the left shows a painting of a woman in red leaning on a window sill looking inside at a colorful dining room scene. The middle shows a tapestry depicting a battle in the Italian Renaissance. The right shows a painting of a big, colorful vase of flowers.

Learn the Story Behind the San Bartolo North Wall Mural

Learn more about the story behind the mural, which involves the Maize God, an animate mountain, and the earliest known depiction of tamales.

A long, rectangular image with red, light yellow, and black colors shows a drawing of a sacred Maya landscape with a mountain, cave, and a stalactite tooth. Nine individuals are shown in the drawing performing a ceremony. The Maize God looks at two figures before him. Behind the mountain, five infants are shown being born from a gourd that symbolizes breath and blood.
