Jar with Cover, c. 9th century A.D.

Chinese

The full, vigorous form of this jar reflects the vitality and optimism of the Tang dynasty. Its buff clay body, roundly swelling shape, and splashed decoration all combine to form an organic whole. While color-splashed wares are common during the Tang period, the use of blue pigment is relatively rare and ordinarily reserved for choice pieces.
