Vessel with an Enthroned Lord and Seated Figure, A.D. 765

This superbly incised Maya vessel depicts a young lord seated upon a low, wooden-basketry throne draped with a fringed jaguar skin. He is elaborately dressed in a luxurious fur or feather cape and wears a feathered headdress inside of which is perched a stuffed monkey. The lord gestures eloquently with both hands toward the figure seated cross-legged before him on the floor, who is more simply clad in a loincloth with a broad sash, a scarf tied around his neck, and a brimmed hat topped with six feathers. His left arm crosses over his right shoulder in a gesture of loyalty, obedience, and submission to the lord.
The vessel is decorated in the rare incised technique typical of the area around the city of Xcalumkín, in the Puuc region of northern Campeche, in the Late Classic period. According to one interpretation, the scene presents a young lord, the son of the reigning king of Xcalumkín. The secondary figure is identified by his plumed sombrero as a sahal (military chief, usually a close relative of the ruler), to whom the young lord is giving instructions.
En esta vasija maya de tallado soberbio se representa a un joven noble sentado en un trono bajo de madera y cestería, recubierto de una piel de jaguar con flecos. La figura lleva un atuendo elaborado, compuesto de una lujosa capa de piel o plumas y un tocado de plumas, dentro del cual vemos un mono disecado. Las manos del noble se extienden en un gesto elocuente hacia la figura sentada frente a él, con las piernas cruzadas, vestido de manera más sencilla, con un taparrabos de amplio fajín, un pañuelo atado al cuello y un sombrero de ala rematado con seis plumas. La figura sentada cruza el brazo izquierdo sobre el hombro derecho en gesto de lealtad, obediencia y sumisión ante su señor.
La vasija se encuentra decorada con una técnica de grabado poco común, típica del periodo clásico tardío en las afueras de la ciudad de Xcalumkín, ubicada en la región Puuc, al norte de Campeche. De acuerdo con una interpretación, la escena presenta a un joven noble, hijo del entonces rey de Xcalumkín. La figura secundaria puede identificarse, gracias a su sombrero con plumas, como un sahal (jefe militar, que normalmente era familiar cercano del gobernante), a quien el joven noble da instrucciones.
