Matt Clark

Matt Clark, artist, Dallas

Moderated by Jennifer Casler Price, curator of Asian, African, and Ancient American art

What does the art of the past mean to the artist of the present? In this ongoing program, moderated by Kimbell staff, artists and architects discuss works in the museum’s collection, share the special insights of the practicing professional, and relate older art to contemporary artistic concerns, including their own.

Fort Worth native Matt Clark gained an early appreciation of art from countless visits to the Kimbell. After receiving his M.A. in painting from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan, Clark lived in Los Angeles and London before returning to North Texas, where he teaches at the University of Texas at Arlington. His work embraces the abstract feel of place, repositioning the traditional complacent landscape with one of viewer-based interpretation. Clark’s landscapes reduce the image to repetitive marks and patterns, referencing the varied locales where he has lived or visited. He will discuss a range of Kimbell works that have inspired him since his youth in the context of his own work.
