James Anno, associate curator of European art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

Upon his death in 1564, at the august age of eighty-nine, Michelangelo was the most celebrated artist since antiquity. How did a local boy from the provincial town of Caprese come to such international renown? Taking The Torment of Saint Anthony (1487) as its starting point, this talk will explore the early career of Michelangelo. We will examine the artist’s first works in Florence, including painting and sculpture, and his move to Rome and back again. Highlights include his marble Rome Pietà (1498–99) and David (1501–4), as well as the enigmatic Doni Tondo (c. 1504) panel painting.

These lectures, part of a continuing series, introduce the permanent collection and selected exhibitions on view at the Kimbell. They are free and open to the public.
