From “Don Pedro de Barberana” to “Las Meninas”: The Artistic Journey of Velázquez

Patricia Manzano Rodríguez, curator, Meadows Museum, Meadows School of Arts, Southern Methodist University, Dallas

This talk examines Diego Velázquez’s artistic evolution, from early works like Don Pedro de Barberana to the iconic Las Meninas, highlighting how these works played a key role in fulfilling Velázquez’s lifelong ambition to become a knight of the Order of Santiago. By examining his innovative approach to portraiture, light, and composition, we will trace how Velázquez used his art to navigate the complex political and social structures of his time, ultimately securing both his knighthood and a lasting legacy in the history of Western art.

These lectures, part of a continuing series, introduce the permanent collection and selected exhibitions on view at the Kimbell.
