Shan Kuang, conservator of paintings, Kimbell Art Museum
The recent cleaning of the Kimbell’s Jupiter Among the Corybantes restored the delicate and luminous qualities for which the Bolognese painter Giuseppe Maria Crespi is celebrated. The conservation treatment was an excellent opportunity to closely examine the execution of this painting on copper. This talk will explore Crespi’s delicate techniques involving the use of translucent glazes, metal supports, and media outside of oil paint. Collectively, these create the enamel-like flesh tones and brilliant draperies that—though generally susceptible to overcleaning—luckily remain in marvelous condition in the Kimbell picture.
These lectures, part of a continuing series, introduce the permanent collection and selected exhibitions on view at the Kimbell.
Lecture programs are supported in part by the Marlene and Spencer Hays Foundation.
