Taking Care: Preservation of Textiles in Historic Collections

Annette Becker, director, Texas Fashion Collection, College of Visual Arts & Design, University of North Texas, Denton

While our experiences with textiles are most often hands-on and intimate, a kind of alchemy happens when these materials enter archive and museum spaces. To balance the competing priorities of preserving artifacts and providing access, collecting institutions must strategically handle and present these fragile materials. They must also weigh which moments in an object’s life should be prioritized, conducting research to inform conservation approaches. Join Texas Fashion Collection Director Dr. Annette Becker for a presentation on practical and theoretical considerations for caring for historic and contemporary textile-based artifacts.

These lectures, part of a continuing series, introduce the permanent collection and selected exhibitions on view at the Kimbell.

Lecture programs are supported in part by the Marlene and Spencer Hays Foundation.
