The Beauty of Work: Picturing Skill from Greek Sculpture to Pompeian Wall Painting

Neville McFerrin, assistant professor of art history, University of North Texas, Denton

Using the Kimbell’s Young Female Attendant as a focal point, this talk will examine the role of workers, and especially working women, in ancient Greece and Rome. The lecture will explore depictions of such individuals in workshop scenes on Greek painted pottery, Roman funerary inscriptions, and Pompeian wall paintings.  Discussion of the marks of making left visible on the rear of the Young Female Attendant will highlight how practice, skill, and craft underpin discussions of idealized social structures across the Mediterranean region.

Wednesday Series: Art In Context lectures introduce the permanent collection and selected exhibitions on view at the Kimbell. They are free and open to the public.
