Wendy Sepponen, assistant professor of art history, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth
Sculpture occupied a distinct place in the minds and lives of late medieval and early modern European viewers. From myths of the art form’s origins and its uncomfortable proximity to idolatry to the materials’ relationships to the natural world, sculptures functioned differently from paintings and works on paper in fundamental ways. This lecture will illuminate the complicated history of sculpture and tackle how to see, understand, and read sculptures like an inhabitant of the early modern world.
These lectures introduce the permanent collection and selected exhibitions on view at the Kimbell. They are free and open to the public.
