Michelle Rich, The Ellen and Harry S. Parker III Assistant Curator of Indigenous American Art, Dallas Museum of Art
The ancient Maya created works of art during the Classic period (AD 250–900) that were elaborately encoded with meaning—objects that were alive in their own right as part of an animate universe. Ranging from ceramics to stone, monumental to miniature, these works intertwine images of rulers, deities, and aspects of the natural world. In her lecture, Rich will dive deep into the stories told by several masterpieces in the collections of the Dallas Museum of Art and the Kimbell that are on view in the exhibition Lives of the Gods: Divinity in Maya Art.
These lectures introduce the permanent collection and selected exhibitions on view at the Kimbell. They are free and open to the public.
