FORT WORTH, TX—Summer days are here at the Kimbell with a full slate of programs for art lovers of all ages to enjoy. Visitors are invited to enjoy film series in conjunction with the special exhibition The Language of Beauty in African Art and the upcoming focus exhibition SLAY: Artemisia Gentileschi & Kehinde Wiley, lounge and listen to live music at weekly Happy Hours in the Kimbell Café, and celebrate art and community with free exhibition admission, live performances and a sweet treat at the next Family Festival / Fiesta de la Familia.
The Kimbell will also be offering free admission to The Language of Beauty in African Art in honor of Juneteenth on June 19, 2022, noon to 5 p.m. Juneteenth, established as a national holiday in 2021 through the efforts of Fort Worth’s own Opal Lee, commemorates the day that news of the Emancipation Proclamation ending slavery reached Texas.

Henry Louis Gates, Jr., takes a new look at the history of Africa, from the birth of humankind to the dawn of the 20th century. This is a breathtaking and personal journey through two hundred thousand years of history, from the origins of art, writing and civilization itself on the African continent through the millennia in which Africa and Africans shaped not only their own rich civilizations but also the wider world. Michael Palin’s Quest for Artemisia (2015, 60 min.)
A recent documentary from the BBC explores the life of 17th-century painter Artemisia Gentileschi. Actor, writer and documentarian Michael Palin travels throughout Italy to unearth the artist’s finest paintings and the complex challenges she faced as a woman centuries ahead of her time. Against all odds, Gentileschi achieved success in a male-dominated world, and her work eventually became sought after in courts across Europe. Today, she is recognized as one of the greatest painters of the Baroque age and indeed one of the most important women painters in the history of art.

Kehinde Wiley: An Economy of Grace (2014, 60 min.)
This intimate portrait of one of this generation’s most accomplished visionaries follows Kehinde Wiley as he embarks on a series of classical portraits of African American women whose poses are based on historical paintings. It documents the project as it unfolds—from concept to canvas and from casting models from the streets of New York to enlisting the fashion house Givenchy to create couture gowns for each woman.

Summer Institute for Teachers
The Language of Beauty in African Art
Daily sessions will feature staff-led presentations, gallery discussions and studio-art activities showcasing the variety of cultures, ideas and techniques represented in the museum’s special exhibition The Language of Beauty in African Art. Participants will create lesson plans to be shared on the last day. This program is open to all local educators but especially designed for studio art, language arts and social studies. Educators must register for all four days. CPE credits are available.
