Sarah K. Kozlowski, associate director, The Edith O’Donnell Institute of Art History, The University of Texas at Dallas, and director, Center for the Art and Architectural History of Port Cities, Naples
A port city at the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, fourteenth-century Naples was a vibrant center of cultural encounter, exchange, and transformation. Its kings and queens were among the great patrons and collectors of late medieval Europe, bringing together precious objects and works of art from Italy, France, Hungary, North Africa, Central Asia, and the Holy Land. This lecture focuses on a group of portable panel paintings that were commissioned by the royal court and emerged from a network of artists, patrons, and artworks in motion across the Mediterranean and beyond.
